Half way house

Our apologies for the long delay in updating our web site, in general, things are "plodding" along at the home due to the imminent involvement of the local council. As mentioned in the past, the home is operated by the Child Welfare Society of Kenya, which is a charity in its own right, but the land and buildings belong to the local council. The local council now wish to bring the home back under their control. The move to local control would be the best thing we could wish for, not only for the home, but also the future of the children as they would be sponsored by the local authority and the local people. Once the change takes place we will be embarking on the establishment of a "Half way house" for the children where they will have shelter and a chance of training for a working future once they have left the security of the home.

We have, recently, had discussions with another charity, based in the UK, who are very close to operating a 100 acre, self sustaining farming community in Nanyuki, where there will be accommodation and training opportunities for the children and families from the local area. This project has the backing of not only the local dignitaries but also that of the ministers in Nairobi. This type of joint assistance will help not only the existing home, by freeing up space for the younger children, but also provide a more secure future for the older ones. We envisage that this year we would hope to provide the home with, not only the usual food,clothing etc, but also to try and improve their accommodation facilities with special regard to sanitation and improvements to the dormitories with new beds and lockers.Our longer term objective is to provide a "half way house" where those children, that have reached the home leaving age, will have access, not only to accommodation, but also vocational training so that they may be more prepared for the future.
