REPORT ON OUR VISIT TO NANYUKI – JANUARY 2018

During this visit we were honoured and delighted to receive £1700 from the Royal Military Police, British Army Training Unit Kenya, who had organised a raffle to raise funds for the charity a few months before. Our thanks were given to all concerned.

Our first visit to see the children was to NEEMA, the wonderful home for abandoned or rescued infants. We donated some baby milk and nappies for the babies and also took some lovely knitted clothes, lovingly made by the Mother of one of our supporters. Thank you so much Fiona’s Mum.

A warm welcome was given us at Ndururi Primary School and we took a large box of shoes which was distributed to the children most in need of new shoes. We visited one of the classrooms where some of the older children were studying, and we noticed that they are in desperate need of some new desks. Hopefully we can help with this problem in the future.

A few visits were made to the Simama Transition Home and, as usual, we had some fun with the children. A large box of shoes and a donation was left and crème eggs were distributed by little Chi Chi. Brian and Penny (Bill’s brother and sister-in-law) took lots of things for the children to play with.

Great Hope Children’s Home was next on the agenda. This was our first visit to this home and were met with the realisation that this is another place so deserving of help. We purchased food for them and also left a donation so that one of their star pupils, Emanuel, could be sent to school.

The accommodation at Great Hope Children’s Home is so very basic and there is no storage accommodation for the children’s clothing and personal items. The bedding also desperately needs replacing and the toilet – well, I will leave you to draw your own conclusions on that one!!!

We also purchased food for Hope and Home Children’s Home, Baraka Orphanage and Beaulah Academy. Here are Caroline and Doreen working extremely hard buying and packing food bought at the market.

Beaulah Academy

We were so pleased to visit Beaulah Academy, a school in the heart of the slum district, and see the children there. You may remember in our previous newsletter, we mentioned a dance school to teach, hopefully, ballet to the extremely under privileged children. Studio One Dance Academy in Ferndown kindly donated so many ballet shoes and dance clothing which were shipped out and we presented them to the children. The staff at Beaulah Academy Dance School will ensure all the dance wear will be stored safely and given to the children who were delighted to receive some of them during our visit. They are having difficulty finding a ballet teacher in Nanyuki but will keep trying. In the meantime they have initiated a dance school on site and we took with us a cd player so they now have something on which to play music.

A visit was made to Murumati Primary School with Karenza Howard Williams. This is a very well run school with an excellent headmaster and staff who make the very best of what they have to benefit the children’s education.

We met Gem Dennis, a local rugby coach who teaches the impoverished children rugby and takes the hard working ones all over the country to take part in rugby tournaments. He has managed to obtain scholarships for so many of the children in some of the top schools in Kenya. Their talent in rugby being the reason for their scholarships. We made a donation for Gem to help get the children into school. Although they have scholarships, they still need money to buy uniforms and everything required for them to attend school – bedding, large metal trunk, bucket, toiletries, and absolutely everything needed, including transport. Sadly, their families cannot afford all this so Gem relies on donors to enable him to finally get the children to school. We also took some football boots kindly donated by some lovely local donors here in the UK, and Threads and Treads in Verwood who kindly collected them for us.

As it is the start of the school year in January, we supported several more children getting back to school, including five older children/young adults studying at the Annexe Secondary school.

During our last visit in April 2017, we funded a bore hore which will serve some of THE most impoverished people just outside Nanyuki. Due to the still volatile situation in some areas outside the town, we were unable to travel to see the bore hole and we have been told that in July things will have settled down enough for our colleagues to visit the site and provide us with some photos.

Finally, as always we would like to thank each and every one of our supporters, especially the Raymond Trust and Stonehouse Rotary for their generous support. Also thankyou to everyone who has donated so much in the way of clothes and shoes which we hope will be shipped out via our wonderful British Army at the end of the summer. Our garage is still jam packed with boxes ready to go!!! Twenty boxes were despatched in October last year but, due to weight restrictions, they could not be flown out, but they are in the system and will arrive in Nanyuki at a later date.

We had the privilege of meeting with the Community Engagement Officer of BATUK (British Army Training Unit Kenya) who was extremely helpful in assisting with the next shipment of our charity boxes. We are immensely proud to be working with BATUK and, when received in Nanyuki, the contents of all the boxes will be distributed by them to all the children.
