Nanyuki Visit

Bill and Carolyn Kirk (chairman and Secretary) have now returned from their most successful visit to the home. We had arranged, before the visit, to have two “Poly Tunnels” erected in the Shamba and were sceptical about the work actually going ahead on time, no need to worry, they turned up spot on time and with the correct items!! We were fortunate to have the company of the local M.P’s assistant, The Chief (assistant to the District Commissioner) and several members of the local committee to witness the hand over of the tunnels to the home. for their contribution to purchase one of the tunnels and a plaque recognising their donation was fitted to one on the units.

Once again we spent as much time as possible with the children, they were all well cared for and were more than a little excited by our visit. There are 82 children resident at the home and the youngest having been admitted at the age of 2 days. The home also provides meals for 95 local children so the call on the food available is high. The new tunnels will provide fresh vegetables and fruit, not only for the children, but also for sale so the additional funds may be raised for the home.

One other project that we have embarked on is “Rain Water Harvesting” where we have arranged for guttering to be fitted to the largest roof area of the home and a large water storage containers installed for the collection of the water. This water will be used for cleaning and irrigation thereby saving funds on the cost of operating the electric bore hole pump.

During our visit we discussed the construction of a new Nursery for the home with the local committee and the MP. The plans have been issued and passed and it now requires some serious co-ordination to push the unit ahead, some thing we will be keeping an eye on over the next few months.The funds for this project have been raised by Lizzy Bywater and we are grateful for all her efforts over the past years to full fill her ambition.
